Garcinia Cambogia… A Nutraceutical Weight Loss Miracle?

Garcinia Cambogia To The Rescue?

These days, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve more than likely come across the name Garcinia Cambogia. Stories and claims about this nutraceutcal weight loss supplement can be found on various internet sites and all over social media, as well as on television, in newspapers, magazines and books. If somehow you’ve managed to escape these stories and claims, chances are pretty good you’ve overheard friends, co-workers or family members talking about this supposed miracle weight loss supplement. Moreover, some well known Hollywood stars are even praising the abilities of Garcinia Cambogia to help them lose weight quickly and easily with little effort involved. Nowadays, the name Garcinia Cambogia is almost impossible to miss.

What Is It?

A tropical fruit that grows in Asia, India and Africa, Garcinia Cambogia, is among the latest nutraceutical supplements being touted as able to effectively reduce appetite and promote significant weight loss, without having to make changes to your typical diet or to do exercise of any kind. In fact, other than actually ingesting the Garcinia Cambogia supplement itself, claims are being made that no effort of any kind is necessary in order to lose weight.

How Is This Possible?

Much of the credit for this extraordinary declaration is being given to  hydroxycitric acid, also known as HCA. HCA is a substance found in the rind of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit and has been known to improve the body’s ability to burn fat and lose weight. HCA extract from Garcinia Cambogia is available to the general public in tablet, capsule, powder and liquid form.

Study Results

Although to date, not many studies have been conducted on humans to back any claims, one placebo-controlled study in particular was performed by a Japanese research laboratory, for 16 weeks, on 44 overweight human subjects of random ages. At the end of the 16 weeks, 39 subjects remained and had completed the study. Results showed that the group having taken the HCA extract had indeed reduced their body fat, while the group that ingested the placebo substance did not have the same positive results. Diet and exercise were not a factor in this study. In addition, no severe adverse effects were detected throughout the study. Although this certainly sounds very positive and there have been other studies with similar results, there have also been studies with negative weight loss results. The fact is, there haven’t actually been enough studies performed on human beings to date, that would enable us to draw any absolute conclusions regarding the effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia.

No Regulatory Involvement

The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate nutraceuticals such as Garcinia Cambogia, so although manufacturers are required to make their labels clear and easy to understand, as well as produce supplements that are safe for human consumption, they are not required to prove their effectiveness. In fact, the nutraceutical industry is not regulated by any government organization at present. Therefore, the only information the general public has to go on, regarding the efficacy of Garcinia Cambogia, is word of mouth and known history.

What Can We Conclude?

The fact is, Garcinia Cambogia has been around for hundreds of years and is known to be safe for ingestion by the human population. Furthermore, according to what people are saying, the supplements being sold have indeed aided many, very successfully, in their efforts to lose weight. In addition, there are a large number of established and well known supplement manufacturers experiencing continued and growing sales of their Garcinia Cambogia products, thus supporting this claim. Of course, everyone is different and just as with most supplements, nutraceutical and otherwise, results will more than likely vary for each individual. When it comes to weight loss, people will need to draw their own conclusions based on their personal experiences with this particular supplement.
